Function and Purpose of Art

As an element of culture, art present or created to meet human needs both physically and mental. A cultural elements will be maintained if its existence is still functioning elements of culture in social life. In everyday life we can feel how desperately we need a means of expression in enjoying the beauty of form.

Based on its function in meeting human needs, the arts are divided into several groups.

1. Individual functions
Humans consist of physical and psychic elements. One element is the emotional psychic. Then the individual function is divided into physical functioning and emotional functioning.

a. physical
This function is fulfilled through the many art-related physical wear, such as clothing, furniture, home appliance transportation and so on.

b. emotional
This function is fulfilled through the fine arts, both from artists and from observers or consumers. Example: paintings, sculptures, films and so on.

2. Social functions
Social function that is enjoyable and beneficial to the interests of many people in the same relative time. These functions are grouped in several areas.

a. Recreation / entertainment
Art can be used as a means to remove or reduce the saturation of grief. Example: movies, comedy, recreation and so on.

b. communication
Art can be used to  communication something like a message, critique, policies, ideas and products to the crowd. Example: ads, posters, banners, and others.

c. Education / Education
Education also utilize art as a means of supporting, for example; illustrations in textbooks, scientific posters, photos and so on.

d. Religion / Religious
Works of art can be used as a trait or religious messages. For example: calligraphy, architecture places of worship, religious clothing and so on.
