Between High Blood Sugar And Cancer

Researchers in Japan looked at blood sugar levels to fine-tune our knowledge of what blood sugar levels are safe to have with regard to cancer.

This particular study was published in the American Journal of Epidemiology in October 2012 and included 2,438 adult participants. Over age 19... 229 individuals died of cancer...

people with diabetes had more than twice the risk of death from cancer as the non-diabetic individuals.
people not diagnosed with diabetes but with some difficulty handling sugar, had about a 50 per cent higher risk of dying from cancer than the participants with healthy responses to taking in sugar.
individuals with fasting blood sugar levels of more than 101 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L) or levels of at least 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) 2 hours after taking in sugar, had significantly higher risks of dying of cancer than did those with lower blood sugar levels.

Types of cancer most often noted were stomach, liver, and lung.

From this information, it was concluded people with both prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes are at risk for death from cancer.

According to the National Institute of Health in the United States, other people at high risk for stomach cancer include:

relatives of stomach cancer patients,
smokers,
those with a bacteria called Helicobacter pylori, the bacteria that causes ulcers,
individuals with polyps larger than one inch, and
those with anemia caused by vitamin B12 malabsorption.

Signs and symptoms include:

fullness or pain after a light meal or loss of appetite,
dark stools,
trouble swallowing,
belching,
generally feeling unwell or easily tired,
nausea and vomiting, and
loss of weight.

Liver cancer can also be caused by:

alcoholism,
autoimmune disease,
hepatitis,
inflammation, or
too much iron.

Signs and symptoms include:

tenderness in the upper right part of the abdomen,
easy bruising or bleeding,
yellowed eyes, or
a swollen abdomen.

The most frequent cause of lung cancer is smoking. Other causes include:

asbestos,
arsenic,
uranium,
radon gas and gasoline,
being related to someone with lung cancer, and
air pollution.

Signs and symptoms include:

chest pain,
persistent cough (especially with blood),
loss of appetite and weight,
feeling tired,
feeling short of breath, and wheezing.

Keeping your blood sugar levels under control as well as avoiding the other risk factors, can be a help in preventing cancer. If you experience any signs or symptoms, do not hesitate to talk to your doctor.
